When there are so
many amazing beaches in
our
islands, it’s difficult to make comparisons, but Uig beach,
alongside Baile na Cille, must be among those at the top of the
list. At low tide, there’s around two miles length
by up to
nearly a mile width of sand, which appears to change its colour
according to the sky and weather.
Baile na Cille consists of the Old Manse,
plus its
converted stables and outbuildings. The guest accommodation
is
comfortable, with an unpretentious simplicity – appropriate
to a
location where the most enjoyable activity may be sitting in the sun
enjoying the view from the gardens.
A stay at this remote (heavenly!)
location
is about getting at least half an hour away from the real world and
taking time to relax, perhaps to watch the birds, look at the flowers,
go fishing or just take a stroll on the beach. If you feel
energetic, you might enjoy tennis on the grass court in the garden, or
play a little croquet. When the weather's good, you could
easily
spend all your time just doing nothing in the garden - it's just such
an idyllic spot.
Richard, the owner for more than 25 years,
takes a
pride in providing well-prepared fresh food for his guests, in a dining
room dominated by a huge model aircraft hanging from the
ceiling. Dinner is a set menu, with special diets catered for
by prior arrangement.
This house has interesting character! Around
the
three sitting rooms, you’ll find table football, bar
billiards,
hi-fi, TV, board-games and a small grand piano.
Wind-down and you’ll find
relaxation easy here.

Suggestion
Uig is on a road described as the longest cul-de-sac in
Europe.
Whether or not that’s true, the drive to the end of the road
affords dramatic views of the Atlantic and an environment that has been
used for various film sets. Explore the side roads,
on the
way to Uig, too and find a number of interesting settlements and
beaches. Murray Macleod’s well known and highly
recommended
Seatrek rib-launch excursions run from nearby Meavaig.
