Perched on the
hillside above
Castlebay’s
pretty harbour, guests at the Craigard are treated to views of Kisimul
Castle, just below, Vatersay in the distance and the comings and goings
at the harbourside shops and bank. When you decide to wander
round the town, you’ll find it's only a couple of
minutes
stroll.
The hotel is modern with
residents’ breakfast
room and a cosy TV lounge, which has an open fireplace plus comfortable
leather sofa and chairs. There is also a choice of attractive
bars, plus a pool
room. Each of the en-suite guest bedrooms is well appointed and
comfortable, with tea and coffee making tray, TV, telephone, radio
alarm and
attractive fabrics.
The Craigard’s spacious
restaurant, with picture windows, is well-known for quality local
produce, including local scallops, cockles and a
fresh ‘catch of the day’ which varies according to
the
fishermens’ fortunes. Daily specials represent
excellent
value.
In early 2007 the hotel received the Best
Hotel
and Inn prize in the inaugural ‘Who Cares
Wins’
excellence awards. The awards are a mark of excellence and
professionalism across the service sector, rewarding tourism businesses
for their contribution to the area's reputation as a first class
visitor destination.

Suggestion
Although
Barra is a
tiny island, which you could drive around in under an hour, it has a
wealth of interesting features, such as the machair at Vatersay, the
restored ancient church of Cill Bharra, Kisimul Casle and
more. The summit of Barra's highest hill, Heaval (gael:
Sheabhal) is only a mile or so distant, you'll climb 1256 feet
to reach it, but will be rewarded with a tremendous view.
So you
may want to take an extra day here to explore thoroughly.....
