The most remarkable airport in the Hebrides is probably on the Isle of Barra, where flights to the Outer Hebrides land and take off from the beach at low tide. It’s said to be the only beach airport in the world that handles scheduled flights and the Twin Otter aircraft are built specially for this route. Two brand new aircraft are being built to enter service around Easter 2015, guaranteeing a positive future for this wonderful airport.
‘Flydrive’ island hopping holidays start in Barra or Stornoway on Thursdays and after collecting your hire car from our Stornoway office (airport transfer included), or from our Barra representative, you’ll be on the road without undue delay. The hire charge includes fully comprehensive insurance covering UK and EU drivers between 21 and 75 (subject to satisfactory completion of the hire documents) – there’s no additional charge for CDW or excess to worry about. Older or non-EU drivers may be insured without extra cost, after approval is received from our insurers.
Our own small fleet of cars (usually Ford Focus, or similar size) is reserved for 5 to 7 night ‘Island Hopper’ holidays, available from mid-April to mid-October.
A picnic hamper (with cutlery, crockery, linen and a flask) is provided in your car so you’ll have all the equipment you need for en route snacks while touring the islands. We’ve even remembered to include a rug to sit on, a map, binoculars and a large umbrella.
‘Weekender’ air holidays with flights to the Outer Hebrides normally include a budget price car from a reputable local hire fleet, though you can upgrade for a modest charge.
As all our holidays are ‘made-to-measure’ we can offer many combinations of air or sea travel, accommodation and transport, from a single centre holiday to the full island hopping experience, that’s essential to really appreciate the Outer Hebrides.
