TRAIN HOLIDAYS TO SCOTLAND....
OR COME BY COACH

No car?  Prefer not to fly? No problem...

Enjoy a Outer Hebrides holiday in an even more eco-friendly way... when you travel by rail or coach.

Once at your port of arrival, you have the choice of travelling through the Western Isles of Scotland with a hire car included in your holiday or by bus.  Perhaps even rent a bicycle.

Simply take a train to Inverness or Oban - book bargain price tickets online, including sleeper trains at www.firstscotrail.com.  For coach services, see City Link, National Express or Megabus.  Don't forget. if you're a Scottish resident of 60 or over, you're entire coach journey and travel through the Outer Hebrides could be completely free of cost with your bus pass.

Between Inverness and Ullapool, a direct Scottish Citylink coach takes you on a journey of around 90 minutes through beautiful scenery to or from the Ullapool ferry port.

We call this holiday the Hebridan Walker, not because we expect you to walk the 140 odd miles from Castlebay on Barra to Stornoway on Lewis, but because you arrive as a foot passenger.

Included is your accommodation on a B&B basis, plus a hopscotch ticket to take you from the mainland ferry port of Ullapool, over to the Outer Hebrides, then between Harris and Berneray and between Eriskay and Barra, then back to the mainland at Oban.  You can make the journey in the opposite direction of you prefer.

We don't include your travel to or from your home to the mainland ports, leaving you free to choose the most suitable route for your wishes.  You could also use this as the basis for a cycling adventure, as your bike will travel free on our holiday.  (See the bike holidays page for a holiday that includes cycle hire.

HEBRIDEAN WALKER - 5 NIGHTS IN THE WESTERN ISLES FROM £269

- a 5 night classic end to end tour of the Outer Hebrides (Western Isles), with relaxing ferry cruises.

Hebrides short break holiday accommodation in Lewis Harris and Skye

FROM ULLAPOOL OR OBAN, VISITING LEWIS, HARRIS, BERNERAY, NORTH UIST, BENBECULA, SOUTH UIST, ERISKAY AND BARRA

Starting from ULLAPOOL (from Oban, the route is reversed), you’ll sail with Calmac ferries across the Minch to Stornoway, any day including Sunday, departing around 1030 or 1715, arriving in Stornoway about 2hrs 45 mins later.

Take two or three days exploring Lewis and Harris from your first hotel, guest house  or bed and breakfast accommodation, before taking the ferry from Leverburgh (Harris) to Berneray, where the machair, beaches and village are worth exploring.

Then take the causeway to North Uist, and follow the scenic road south over more causeways, through Benbecula and South Uist, picking out the activities, historic features or sights that interest you, until you reach the final causeway to Eriskay.

Berneray to Eriskay is only a three hour journey by bus, but there’s more than enough to make a couple of night’s stay well worthwhile.  Finally, take the Calmac ferry from Eriskay to the tiny island of Barra, for a day or two soaking up the scenery and tranquillity.

Your ferry journey back from the Western Isles, across the Minch, departs from Castlebay (Barra) and arrives at the mainland port of Oban.
