Broad Bay House opened in 2008 and is just one of a handful in Scotland to achieve VisitScotland 5 star Guest House Accreditation – maintaining its reputation for being one of the finest places to stay in the Outer Hebrides.
Contemporary comfort at Broad Bay House, Isle of Lewis
On a clear day, the Scottish Highlands can be seen across the Minch. Inside there are four spacious luxury en-suite bedrooms, including one for the less mobile visitor. The location itself is worth the 5-star rating, just a few miles north of Stornoway, and adjacent to a sweeping sandy beach with direct access from the house to the shore.
Inside there are four spacious luxury en-suite bedrooms. All bedrooms are equipped with a flat screen Smart TV, a Bose Bluetooth speaker and DVD player. In addition, each room has a Nespresso machine, complimentary snacks and luxury toiletries. Outside each bedroom is a personal decking area, with seating. Soft colours, natural woods and sympathetic furnishings provide a relaxing environment.
Guest facilities include Wi-Fi, a guest laundry and a guest study. The house is fully licensed, and has a wide ranging and interesting wine, gin and malt whisky list.
A highlight of the house is the large guest dining/lounge which has a vaulted ceiling and windows on three sides, providing lovely views of the coast and local wildlife, while a solid fuel stove makes life cosy when the weather demands.
Broad Bay House is a purpose-built luxury guest house. Every room is thus designed and furnished to give you comfort and relaxation, with every possible convenience. A good night’s sleep is assured with luxury mattresses, fine Egyptian cotton bed linen and goose down duvets. For those with allergies, synthetic duvets and pillows are available on request.
Food and drink
Broad Bay House received one of the first VisitScotland “Taste our Best” food awards for use of the great Outer Hebrides local produce, and that award continues to be received each year. Owners Sue and Tom pride themselves on high-quality food, based on local ingredients, and they source fresh ingredients from across the islands and Highlands. Breakfast is served in the guest dining room and there is a large continental option with cereals, fruit, yoghurt, croissants, muffins and more. Plus a cooked Scottish menu with plenty to choose from, all served with delicious homemade bread.
Broad Bay House offers guests an informal 3-course evening meal 2 nights of the week and Scottish sharing platters on 3 nights of the week (excluding Monday and Thursday evenings). Booking in advance is essential.
For 3-course evening meals, a set menu is served with locally sourced, seasonal ingredients especially the islands’ fish, shellfish, lamb and game. For sharing platters, there is a choice of 2 platters for two to share – Scottish Tasting Platter or Cheese & Charcuterie.
Sue & Tom can accommodate any food preferences, intolerances or allergies providing you advise them well in advance, although they are unable to guarantee that food is 100% nut or other allergens free.
Convenient for town and touring
There’s plenty of free off-road parking for guests and Broad Bay House is only a few minutes’ drive from the island’s main town – Stornoway. If you want a change from the beach at the end of the garden, the three beaches at Tolsta, just 6 miles away, offer a variety of opportunities to walk, surf or simply sit and look, while the entire island of Lewis and Harris may be easily accessed from Broad Bay House.
