Dark Island Hotel is popular for business and pleasure in the Uists, thanks to its central location and larger size than most in the area (42 rooms).

Dark Island Hotel central to the Uists

Privately owned, the Dark Island Hotel is very conveniently situated on the Isle of Benbecula, a short distance from Balavanich, where there are shops, airport and a small hospital.  It is almost exactly half way between the ferry slipways at Eriskay (for Barra) and Berneray (for Harris).  A green tourism award is pending.

At the side of the Dark Island Hotel, a track leads directly over machair (sand dunes) to the beach. On a summer evening, as you stroll along the machair tracks close to the hotel, you may hear corncrakes, oystercatchers and lapwings calling from the vibrant patchwork of machair cornfields. Next to the track, orchids bloom in a variety of competing purples.

The Sgoil Lionacleit Sports Centre is within easy walking distance, offering swimming pool, fitness suite and sauna.  (Link to information)

Back inside the hotel, there’s a small lounge area, restaurant, plus lounge and public bars.

“This hotel is in a quiet location with probably half a dozen house around, the nearest shops were an hours walk. just behind the hotel is a large isolated beach where seals can be found on rocky outcrops close to the beach. The hotel is clean and tidy and the meals a very good, the bedroom was quite large with an en-suite bathroom both of which were clean and tidy, well mannered staff made this a lovely stay.” – A TripAdvisor reviewer.
